McMaster Water Updates
Dear Reader,

Welcome to the June edition of this monthly e-newsletter.

The aim of this newsletter is to build a community of water researchers and enthusiasts at McMaster by sharing all things water.

Please let us know if you would like to
include something in the next newsletter, or share your thoughts on what you would like to see added to the newsletters here.

This month, we'd like to highlight a funding opportunity for PhD students to do fieldworkKindly share this newsletter with your students and encourage them to sign up, as there are many Postdoc, PhD and MSc positions advertised every month.

Highlights in this edition include:

Water News

A short round-up of some water news at McMaster and around the world

What's coming out of McMaster University & Canada: Drought fears surge in British Columbia as rivers dry up across the province, but Metro Vancouver looks to change residential water use to curtail waste. City of Ottawa takes first step to banning bottled water at its facilities. Husky Oil receives $2.5 million fine for releasing oil into the North Saskatchewan River. Thunder Bay and Toronto look to adopt resiliency plans to combat flooding and climate change.

A global rundown: Our water cycle diagrams are giving us a false sense of water security. Hundreds of Indian villages have been evacuated as a historic drought forces families to abandon their homes in search of water. New report from WHO: 1 in 3 people globally do not have access to safely managed drinking water, and more than half of the world does not have access to safely managed sanitation services. Sydney was hit by heavy rain this week, causing flash flooding but it won't bring any relief to the drought crisis in NSW. To survive a climate-changed ocean, a Noah's Ark approach won't work.

Universitas 21 Early Career Researcher Workshop 2019: 'Water and Society' is accepting nominations

The U21 2019 workshop theme ‘Water in Society’, aims to deepen participants’ understanding of how research impacts on water and sustainability through cross-disciplinary knowledge exchange, skills-sharing and networking. In order to achieve this, the three-day programme will include small group workshops, poster sessions by ECRs, talks by established researchers, and sessions with international and interdisciplinary perspectives on ‘Water in Society’. The workshop will be a unique opportunity for ECRs from across all disciplines to share knowledge, experiences and current projects from around the world.

Details of the workshop can also be found on our website and nominations can be made via the online submission form. The deadline for this year's nominations is Friday 16 August

The McMaster Discovery Program is now recruiting students for its ninth year!

GWF Affiliate Project

GWF invites interested researchers to submit an application for a GWF Affiliate Project. The purpose of these affiliated projects is to give opportunities to new and existing GWF researchers to either enhance existing research, or to present new research. These opportunities may contribute strategically towards the GWF vision, mission and goals. GWF seeks to provide in-kind support to these projects and to benefit from these linkages wherever possible.
