Water News

A short round up of some water news at McMaster and around the world.

Whats coming out of McMaster and Canada: The FloodNet AGM for 2019 will be taking place in June. Please see the events section below for more details.

A global run down: If we care about plastic waste, why won’t we stop drinking bottled water? Jakarta is the fastest sinking big city in the world due to subsidence caused by groundwater pumping. Just one-third of the world's longest rivers remain free-flowing. Soaking up pharmaceuticals and personal care products from water. In parched South Africa, water-storing football fields give drought the boot. Trade could be key to balancing conservation of freshwater sources and food security.

2. Alliance grants, Option 1, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

NSERC has announced the launch of the new research partnerships program, now called Alliance Grants. This program will replace the Collaborative Research and Development (CRD), Engage (and Engage Plus), Industrial Research Chairs, Strategic Partnership (Projects and Networks), Experience and Connect grants.

Researchers seeking to submit under the current CRD and Engage programs have until May 31, 2019 to apply.

All currently awarded projects remain as is.

The objective of the Alliance Grant is to encourage greater collaboration in Canada’s research and development system by 1) providing support for projects that include both generators and users of research results and knowledge, and 2) accommodating a broader range of partners. Alliance also includes incentives for collaborations with small and medium-sized enterprises and multi-sectoral partnerships, and offers an accelerated means for projects to scale and grow.

Key benefits:
. single point of entry to rapidly develop new partnerships, or facilitate the growth of existing research collaborations;
. support for projects of different levels of scale and complexity from new, short term, one-on-one collaborations, to larger multi-stakeholder research teams;
. enhanced flexibility in the types of projects and partners, providing more opportunities for more innovative collaborations;
. supports research focused on outcomes as well as the training of research talent in a multi-partner environment;
. streamlined application process resulting in faster decision times, thereby supporting modern and fast- breaking research.

3. Connection grants, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

The objective of the Connection Grant is to support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted, knowledge mobilization initiatives.
The grant supports workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, Summer institutes or other events, or outreach activities that facilitate:
a) disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary exchanges in the humanities and social sciences;
b) scholarly exchanges between those working in the social sciences and humanities, and those working in other research fields;
c) intersectoral exchanges between academic researchers in the humanities and social sciences, and researchers and practitioners from the public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors; and/or
d) international research collaboration and scholarly exchanges between researchers, students, and non-academic partners from other countries.

Proposals may involve any disciplines, thematic areas, approaches, or subject areas eligible for SSHRC funding. Particular importance is placed on applications proposing open-access and open-source approaches to knowledge mobilization. All proposals must include a plan for the maintenance, lifespan, dissemination and preservation of any resulting digital data.

Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative
SSHRC is offering special Connection Grants to help the Canadian social sciences and humanities research community strengthen its capacity for data management; the Research Data Management Capacity Building Initiative.

The initiative offers the research community (i.e., disciplinary and professional associations, institutions, individual researchers) Connection Grants to support the development, adoption and dissemination of research data management standards, practices, tools and skills, appropriate to their field.

Additional support in the form of eligible cash and/or in kind contributions (excluding registration fees), equivalent to a minimum of 50% of the amount requested from SSHRC, must come from other sources (e.g., sponsoring organizations).

Applicants may draw on complementary funding from SSHRC research grants and/or other research funding agencies, however, must indicate there is no duplication of financial support for the same budget expenses. While SSHRC funds may be used in this complementary way, the funds can not be counted toward the 50% requirement for matching funds.

4. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award, UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia)

Suqia’s goal is not limited to the provision of potable water to those in need. We also identify how innovative and sustainable technologies can be part of the solution to the global water crisis. We understand that the scale of the water crisis demands different approaches that extend beyond giving water. This is why, in line with the UAE’s goal to become a knowledge-based economy with a strong focus on technology, R&D and innovation, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched a USD 1 million global award to find sustainable solutions to water scarcity.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award supports research and development of new and innovative technologies that produce, desalinate and purify water, using solar energy to support the global position of the UAE in developing solutions for challenges that are faced by poverty- and disaster-stricken communities worldwide.

The Award encourages leading corporations, research centers, institutions and innovators from across the world to compete in finding sustainable and innovative solar-energy solutions to the problem of water scarcity.

The Award is comprised of 3 main categories that target pioneering organisations, research centers, individuals, educational institutions, and innovators from all around the world to motivate participants to come up with innovative, solar-powered solutions with the aim of producing clean drinking water:
1. Innovative Projects Award: large projects award and small projects award
2. Innovative Individual Award: distinguished researcher award and youth award
3. Innovative Research and Development Award: National institutions award and international institutions award.

Link: https://www.suqia.ae/en/awards

Value: The values for each type of award is different. Please visit the links above, per award, to see the value of each.

Application Process: June 30, 2019
